A Quick History of Memory Foam

Research indicates that NASA started research in the 1960’s looking for a better material for aircraft seating. The research was released in the 1980’s and taken up by some manufacturers who saw an opportunity to market the material for a variety of commercial uses. It was identified as a fantastic material for bedridden patients who were immobile, as it reduced their pressure sores. Over time it became widely available for mattresses and pillows, and more recently shoes.

Memory Foam

What are Memory Foam innersoles?

Memory foam in the footwear industry is normally used for innersoles and manufactured using a high density polyurethane material, which is well known for providing good support and excellent pressure relief. Memory foam is viscoelastic, and as its name suggests, has elastic properties, which is why you can see the imprint of your hand or finger on the material when you press the material. It is temperature sensitive, so when it becomes warm from your foot, will mould around it slightly.

Insoles aren’t just for the elderly or people with podiatry problems. While they can provide effective relief from chronic foot pain and a myriad of other foot conditions, insoles can also improve the comfort for anybody who may spend long hours in their shoes.

Some of the benefits of Memory Foam innersoles include;

Weight distribution for extra comfort

Memory foam helps to distribute your weight across the whole surface of your foot, which helps to relieve pressure from the heels and balls of your feet. The distribution of weight can assist in removing pressure from feet, and associated muscles and joints. As this pressure is spread and lessened in the key areas of your feet, they’ll feel more comfortable and less tired after a long day being on your feet.

Increased comfort

Memory foam insoles provides cushioning to each part of your feet, with a small amount of feedback and bounce. When you step on these insoles and then lift your foot, the memory foam comes back to its initial shape quickly, although this does diminish over time. The feeling of comfort when trying on the shoes is almost immediate.

Supports your feet

As the memory foam moulds to the shape of your feet, it acts as a support. The support reduces fatigue over a long day and can make a big improvement to foot comfort. Pain in any form can change the way you walk (to avoid the pain), not only in your feet, but other areas as well, so it’s important to wear comfortable shoes.

Improves the fit of your shoes

Shoes that are too big often shift around and rub on the skin of your feet, which is not only uncomfortable, but can also result in corns, calluses, blisters, ingrown toenails and eventually even lead to the development of bunions. Memory foam innersoles provide a simple and convenient solution to this problem.

Feel like you’re walking on clouds

Besides pointing out all the benefits above, anyone who has ever touched memory foam will tell you just how soft it is. All our shoes come with memory foam innersoles, and with its supportive nature and “cloud like” feel, your feet will love the comfort.

To make our shoes even more comfortable we’ve also softened up the outsoles, which will further absorb impact, pressure and weight.

We’ve combined a memory foam innersole, and a softer outsole, with quality uppers, which we believe is a comfort combination that’s hard to beat.
